The Online Culture of Contempt

We live in an era where tearing others down has tragically become a spectator sport, masked as entertainment and fueled by the algorithms of modern social media. Scrolling through our feeds, it is disheartening to witness how quickly character assassination, public shaming, and cynical criticism have been weaponized so that individuals can feel superior or curate an illusion of moral height. This online culture of contempt exploits a deep spiritual wound: the temptation to measure our own worth by how low we can push someone else. Yet, as Catholics, we are reminded that charity is not a passive sentiment, and every human person is made in the image and likeness of God. When we participate in or applaud this digital degradation, we are not just engaging in gossip; we are actively wounding the Body of Christ.

Tragically, this cruelty has also been industrialized, transforming malice into a lucrative commodity where outrage, division, and character destruction generate clicks, views, and revenue. But we must ask ourselves when humiliation became a business model, and more importantly, what Jesus would do in the face of such relentless hostility. Christ never sought to elevate Himself by crushing the vulnerable or humiliating the fallen; instead, He bent down in the dirt to protect the accused, offered mercy to the broken, and commanded us to love our enemies. True Christian witness calls us to reject the cheap currency of online cruelty, silence the noise of contempt, and rebuild our digital spaces into places of grace, truth, and unconditional human dignity.
