A Call to Repentance and Final Judgment

Today’s Gospel passage featuring the Parable of the Dragnet confronts us with the sobering, unvarnished reality of the final judgment . Jesus compares the kingdom of heaven to a massive net cast into the sea that gathers fish of every kind, representing all of humanity mingled together in this present age. When the net is finally hauled ashore, a definitive sorting takes place. Christ explicitly reveals that at the end of the age, the angels will go forth to separate the wicked from the righteous, casting those who stubbornly rejected God's grace and refused to believe into the blazing furnace of hell, where there is wailing and gnashing of teeth.
