The Little Sisters of the Poor religious order has asked the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to extend an injunction blocking enforcement of a federal mandate to provide contraceptive coverage in employee health insurance. A brief filed Feb. 24 with the appeals court in Denver said the injunction is necessary "to prevent the impermissible government pressure" on the order to offer an employee health benefits plan consistent with their Catholic faith, which is against contraceptives. "For the Little Sisters, an injunction ... is necessary to spare (them) from the illegal coercion" forcing them to provide coverage they oppose, said the brief, filed on behalf of the Colorado-based order and their co-plaintiffs -- Christian Brothers Services and Christian Brothers Employee Benefits Trust. Lord, teach me not to hold on to life too tightly. Teach me to take it as a gift. To enjoy it, to cherish it while I have it, but to let go gracefully and thankfully when the time comes. The gift is great, but the Giver is greater still. You are the Giver and in You is a life that never ends. Amen. Such a simple prayer but it helps to maintain our focus throughout our days on this earth. Our obsession for created things very often is the biggest obstacle to a more fulfilling relationship with God. How often do we cling to things that will certainly go away when we have died? It is the gift of everlasting life that is most important. It is the time we will spend in eternity with God that should drive our passions. God does not want us to be destitute, merely to realize the place that created things have in our lives. As we approach the Lenten season, it is a great time to focus on the Giver. I hope the prayer above brings you as much comfort as it has given me over the years.

Faced with the looming construction of a multimillion-dollar, regional abortion facility by Planned Parenthood Gulf South, New Orleans Archbishop Gregory M. Aymond has cautioned local Catholics and businesses they would be "cooperating with the evil that will take place" at the clinic if they participated in its preparation or construction. In an open letter, published on the front page of the Feb. 1 issue of the Clarion Herald, the archdiocesan newspaper, Archbishop Aymond said the caution extends to any person or business "involved in the acquisition, preparation and construction of this (abortion) facility." Playing off the idea of using social media to summon crowds for parties or mischief, mobs of Buffalo-area Roman Catholics have been filling pews and lifting spirits at some of the city's original, now often sparsely attended, churches. It works this way: On a given Sunday, participants attend Mass en masse at a church they've picked in an online vote and promoted through Facebook and Twitter. Visitors experience the architecture, heritage and spirit of the aging houses of worship and the churches once again see the numbers they were built for, along with a helpful bump in donations when the collection baskets are passed.
